Dust, the bain of digital photographers has a new enemy, Lightroom 5. I have recently found a new easy way to remove dust spots from your photos, even ones that are hard to see. The Visualize Spots feature makes the process fast and painless.
I was photographing some products on my white, well used background. Well its not so white anymore, it’s riddled with scratches and spots. Usually you don’t see them when I shoot portraits because of the lighting I use but in this case they were very apparent. As I was busy trying to get rid of the sensor dust spots and marks on the background I noticed a small checkbox at the bottom of the screen labeled ‘Visualize Spots’. What does this do I wondered, so I clicked it.
And what do you know, a black and white line art version of my photo was displayed. It highlighted all the spots, even ones I didn’t see in the regular view, that made it easy to then fix using the healing brush. Choose the brush size, click over the spot and voila!
How much easier can it get to remove dust! What a great feature! Below there is a short video walk through of the process.

The products I was shooting are from Northstar Taping Tools, who make very high end automatic drywall tapers and accessories. They are meticulously made here in Canada and sell all around the world. Their website is just being built but will be online shortly.
